I have never really given much thought to legal matters; when my grand daddy died, my dad was involved with some law office or other in downtown Wichita to sort out the estate. When I got married and flew the family nest; dad referred me to that same law office to sort out things relating to my new station in life as a homeowner and mortgage debtor.
Come the sad day when dad passed away, I used the same firm of lawyers – it might even have been the same lawyer that once handled grand daddy’s will. While I could not have said that I in anyway knew the people in that law firm; they gave me a comfortable feel and had never upset or disappointed me in my rare dealings with them. I even used them to set up a trust fund for the kids and that is the key to my loyalty to them – I trusted them. I guess that, at that time, my thoughts on the legal profession (if I had any) were along the lines of – “why have a dog and bark yourself”; with a bit of – “if it comes to it; I can always say that I demand to see my lawyer”.
Then, Something Happened
From the little bit of my life story divulged above; I guess you have realized that I am no spring chicken; but, I do not think I am anywhere near the “grumpy old man” stage. However, it got close to that when our next door neighbor of 30 years died and his widow sold up the house and moved to Chicago. We then became exposed to the neighbors from hell. Loud music at all hours; indiscriminate and inconsiderate vehicle parking outside our house; speeding in the street outside; you name any anti-social vice and they had it! That’s when I told them that; “you will be hearing from my lawyer”.
It Wasn’t Quite As I Expected
My nice, friendly lawyer did not impress them at all; if anything, it made them worse. That’s when I asked my lawyer if we could sue them in the courts. “Yes”, he said; “your chances of full success are good; but, I cannot appear for you”.
Imagine my surprise to learn that not all lawyers are licensed to appear in court. Only the Attorneys in Wichita KS can argue your case before a judge. Fortunately, my ordinary lawyer was a partner in a fairly big firm and he kept it in-house by referring me to a Fleeson Gooing Attorney; who not only argued my case; but, won me an injunction and shut those noisy neighbors up for good.
